We live on the Red Road, which is a spectacularly beautiful and remote road running along the coastline of southeast Hawaii.
It's a magical part of OLD Hawaii - giant mango trees, monkey pods, kamani hardwood trees, lauhala, coco nuts and more create
a green canopy. You drive under these verdant tunnels along the way, opening out every few miles onto the brilliant blue of
the crashing surf.

| The Warm Pond |

Twenty minutes drive north on The Red Road brings you to the Warm Pond. It's a large pool naturally heated from a subterranean
lava tube and flushed by the ocean swell. It's a warm, relaxing place to swim under the swaying palms on the edge of the sea.
Another ten minute drive brings you to Kapoho Tide Pools where you may snorkle with numerous tropical fish and, on frequent
lucky days, swim with green sea turtles. There are many kinds of wildly colored corals here, some not found on any other part
of the island.
A little farther on the road bings you to Champagne Pond; a calm and protected tide pool frequented by green turtles.

After a ten minute drive south, the road ends at what was once Kalapna and Kaimu Black Sand Beach. Kaimu, before it was taken
by the lava flow in 1990, was the most scenic and most famous of all the beaches on the island. Now a brand new, in geologic
terms, small black sand beach, can be found twenty minutes walk out over the lava flow from the old shoreline. An added attraction
- some kite experts say this is the best kite flying spot in the islands. And then there's Verna's Drive-in! Great "Grinds"(that's
hawaiian for food!) and try the coconut ice cream.
